Fairytale of New York

in Christmas

“When you first took my hand on a cold christmas eve,

You promised me Broadway was waiting for me

You were handsome, you were pretty, Queen of New York City.”

  • The Pogues “Fairytale of New York”

Sung in a thousand karaoke bars across the world, the Pogues’ timeless Christmas knees-up anthem immortalises the spirit of New York City during the festive season. As in Frank Capra’s magical “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the Big Apple is teeming with characters, with community, hope and redemption.

A stroll through the Rockefeller Centre Plaza will take you through history; the big tree here has stood since 1931, and now boasts a luminous 30,000 lights. The tradition of the Rockefeller Christmas Tree can be traced back to the Great Depression, and is complemented by an outdoor ice skating rink.

Macy’s Santaland is also a must; elves, toy-trains and a mini winter wonderland will always be a winner for younger kids. The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx has one of the city’s great Christmas traditions- the Holiday Train Show, and is a renowned favourite for youngsters on New York Tours.

For the more discerning tourist, New York museums offer a breathtaking diversity of the arts, crafts, history and the present. Impressing with some of the rarest collections, a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the wonderfully designed Guggenheim Musuem will provide some warmth inside from the festive cold!

A holiday tradition for 75 years and counting, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular is an exciting holiday celebration for all the family.  Join the world-famous Radio City Rockettes as they dance and kick, with precision and pointed toe, all the way into your heart. Take a thrilling tour of Manhattan’s famous landmarks on a red double-decker bus, explore the magic of Santa’s toy workshop with life-sized dancing rag dolls, and learn about the story of the first Christmas during the living nativity scene and sit slack-jawed during the show-stopping fireworks display in Times Square, all without leaving the comfort of your music hall seat.

Even with the cold wind blowing (& sometimes even snow falling) New York City is transformed into a winter wonderland -- from the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center to the Christmas window displays at Macy's and Saks Fifth Avenue, there are endless Christmas sights to enjoy during the holiday season in New York City, where the air is filled with freshly roasted chestnuts!
